As fabric retailers, we get a lot of questions related to care of fabrics and one fabric that frequently gets request from our customers is Corduroy.
In this blog post, we answer the question and equip you with the right knowledge to care for Corduroy fabric!
We have written about Corduroy many times before. It is one of our best sellers and customers love the feel and texture.
Corduroy fabric is a dense textile with distinctive parallel ridges or “cords” created by vertical pile or “wales.”
It is typically made from cotton or a blend of cotton and other fibers and is commonly used in the production of clothing and home decor items.
If you want a deep dive into everything Corduroy, here is our blog post: Corduroy Fabric: The Cozy and Durable Textile for All Seasons.
The thing with Corduroy is, being a delicate fabric, needs a bit more attention than others (like PVC or plain cotton fabric) when it comes to washing.
The main issue is related to loss of texture and shrinkage, but colour fading is also a possibility. To maintain the longevity of your corduroy fabric, it is crucial to provide proper care.
Depending on where you buy it from, always check the labels attached to your corduroy fabrics.
These labels can provide valuable information about the recommended washing methods and any specific precautions to take.
It is VERY important to go for a gentle, color-preserving detergent specifically designed for delicate fabrics like Corduroy.
No harsh chemicals, as these can compromise the integrity of corduroy.
If the Corduroy has a an FR coating, extra measures need to be in place:
Avoid anything over 30 degrees and if possible, stick with cold water. Especially if it has an FR coating.
Use a gentle cycle on your washing machine to prevent excessive friction that may harm the texture.
If it is a garment, turn them inside out before placing them in the washing machine. This minimizes direct contact with the washing drum.
Overcrowding can lead to bad washing and cleaning, and increased friction, potentially causing damage to the fabric.
After washing, PLEASE, try to resist the temptation of placing everything in the tumble drier!
Instead, opt for air drying by laying your corduroy garments flat on a clean, dry surface.
This recommendation stems not only from the need to preserve color but, more importantly, to maintain the distinct feel and texture of corduroy.
